Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed five drones on Wednesday morning, 21 October 2026, that had been launched toward Madinah and the Eastern Region, according to Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, official spokesman of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen.
Al-Maliki announced the operation on X in two steps. His first post reported that four drones heading for the Kingdom had been brought down over the Madinah and Eastern regions. A later update added a fifth drone, also intercepted in the Eastern Region. The statement did not name the party that launched them.
The morning's interceptions followed a busy Tuesday over the capital. On 20 October the coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militia toward Riyadh, and later that day a drone in the Riyadh region was also shot down. In a further statement, the coalition said its forces had destroyed the launcher used to fire the missile.
A short-lived alert was issued in Riyadh during Tuesday's incident before the authorities announced that the danger had passed. The General Directorate of Civil Defense has repeatedly urged residents to follow official instructions and has warned against filming interception operations or debris sites, or sharing unofficial information about them, noting that doing so carries legal consequences.
The latest operations add to a string of successful interceptions by the Kingdom's air defences in recent weeks, covering drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles aimed at several regions. They include a cruise missile destroyed in the Madinah region on 15 October and four drones brought down over the Riyadh region and the Eastern and southern regions on 17 October.
