Neom handed Al Ahli an unexpected boost by ending Al Hilal’s remarkable unbeaten run in the Saudi Pro League, preventing the Riyadh-based club from moving closer to one of the competition’s most significant records.
Al Hilal suffered a 2-0 defeat to Neom on Monday, bringing its unbeaten streak in the professional league to an end at 47 consecutive matches.
Neom Brings Al Hilal’s Streak to an End
Al Hilal entered the match with an extraordinary league record, having avoided defeat in 47 consecutive Saudi Pro League matches.
The team was only four matches away from equaling Al Ahli’s historic record when Neom produced a major upset, securing a 2-0 victory at Kingdom Arena and bringing the streak to an end.
The result carries particular significance because of the length of Al Hilal’s run, which had placed the club within touching distance of one of the longest unbeaten sequences in the history of the competition.
Al Ahli’s Historic Record Remains Untouched
Al Ahli continues to hold the record for the longest unbeaten run in Saudi Pro League history, with the Jeddah club going 51 consecutive matches without defeat between January 2014 and February 2016.
Al Hilal needed to avoid defeat in just four more matches to equal that mark.
Instead, Neom’s victory stopped the streak at 47, leaving Al Ahli’s record intact.
The record had increasingly come under threat as Al Hilal continued to collect results without losing, but Monday’s defeat brought that pursuit to an unexpected conclusion.
A Major Victory for Neom
The importance of Neom’s victory extends beyond the impact on the record books.
Beating one of the league’s strongest sides 2-0 represents a significant result for Neom and gives the club an important boost in its campaign.
The victory came at Kingdom Arena, making the achievement even more notable, while the manner of the result demonstrated Neom’s ability to compete against one of the league’s leading teams.
Al Hilal Miss Chance to Make History
Al Hilal had been within four matches of matching Al Ahli’s 51-game unbeaten record.
The defeat means the club must now begin another unbeaten sequence if it wants to challenge the record again in the future.
For Al Ahli, meanwhile, Neom’s result provided an indirect benefit, preserving a historic achievement that had appeared increasingly vulnerable as Al Hilal continued its remarkable run.
A Historic Night for Neom
Regardless of the record implications for Al Hilal and Al Ahli, the victory will represent an important milestone for Neom.
Ending a 47-match unbeaten run against one of the league’s biggest clubs gives the result a special place in the team’s campaign and adds another major storyline to an increasingly competitive Saudi Pro League season.
The defeat will now raise questions about how Al Hilal responds and whether the team can immediately begin another strong run, while Al Ahli continues to hold the benchmark that Al Hilal had been closing in on.
Ultimately, the match was another reminder that records are built over long periods but can change in a single night. After 47 matches without defeat, Neom brought Al Hilal’s extraordinary run to an end and ensured that Al Ahli’s historic 51-match record remains standing.
