Meta Launches Free “Facebook Verified” Badge Using Selfie Video Verification

Meta has introduced a new identity verification feature called Facebook Verified, allowing eligible Facebook users to confirm that a real person is behind their account without paying for a subscription.

Unlike the paid Meta Verified service, the new Facebook Verified badge is primarily designed to verify identity through a quick process involving a selfie video.

How to Get the Facebook Verified Badge

Meta is rolling out Facebook Verified gradually, beginning in selected markets before expanding the feature more widely.

When the feature becomes available to an eligible account, users may see a Facebook Verified notification on their profile or within services including Marketplace, Dating and Groups.

Users can then begin the verification process and record a short selfie video when prompted.

Meta compares the video with existing profile photos before completing the verification process. Once approved, the badge is automatically added to the account.

Who Is Eligible?

Users must meet several requirements to qualify for Facebook Verified.

They must be at least 18 years old, have a personal Facebook account in good standing, comply with Facebook’s Community Standards and show no indications of fraudulent or untrustworthy behavior.

The feature is currently unavailable for Facebook Pages and profiles using Professional Mode.

Because Facebook Verified is being introduced gradually, eligible users may not immediately see the verification option on their accounts.

Where Will the Badge Appear?

Once verification is completed, the Facebook Verified badge can appear on the user’s Facebook profile as well as across Marketplace, Facebook Dating and Groups.

Meta also plans to display the badge alongside posts in Facebook feeds through a future update.

Facebook Verified vs. Meta Verified

Despite their similar names, Facebook Verified and Meta Verified serve different purposes.

Facebook Verified focuses on confirming that a real person is behind an account and does not require a paid subscription under the new system.

Meta Verified, meanwhile, remains a separate subscription service offering its own set of features and benefits.

Verification Does Not Guarantee Trustworthiness

Meta has emphasized that the badge should not be interpreted as an endorsement or guarantee that an account holder is trustworthy.

Instead, it confirms that the individual behind the account has successfully completed Meta’s identity verification process.

Verified users must still comply with Facebook’s Community Standards, commerce policies and other platform rules.

The introduction of Facebook Verified adds another layer of identity verification to the social network, particularly in areas involving direct interactions between users, as online platforms continue to address challenges involving impersonation, fake accounts and fraudulent activity.
