Saudi Public Health Authority has confirmed that no cases of Hantavirus have been recorded in Saudi Arabia so far, while authorities continue closely monitoring international developments related to the virus.
Dr. Emad Al-Mohamadi, assistant CEO of the authority, stated that health agencies have increased precautionary monitoring and sensitivity toward any suspected symptoms as part of efforts to strengthen early response systems for infectious diseases and protect public health security.
He explained that Weqaya remains in continuous coordination with international health organizations and relevant authorities to follow updates regarding the virus and assess potential risks on an ongoing basis.
According to officials, the likelihood of the virus reaching Saudi Arabia is currently considered very low based on available global data.
The statements came after World Health Organization announced it was monitoring confirmed Hantavirus cases linked to the cruise ship “MV Hondius,” an incident that has drawn significant international health attention in recent days.
Reports indicate the situation began in April after the vessel stopped at Saint Helena Island, before the first confirmed infection was identified in early May, prompting wider contact-tracing operations involving passengers and travelers connected to the voyage.
Saudi health authorities emphasized that epidemiological surveillance and preventive assessments continue around the clock as part of broader efforts to monitor global health developments and respond rapidly to any emerging risks.
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has significantly strengthened its public health infrastructure and epidemic preparedness systems through enhanced monitoring technologies, preventive programs, and international coordination aimed at addressing cross-border health threats efficiently.
