The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised Saudi Arabia’s healthcare reforms, stating that the measures implemented during 2025 significantly improved the efficiency of the Kingdom’s healthcare system and strengthened key public health indicators.
The assessment was published in the IMF’s 2026 Article IV Consultation Report, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s progress in expanding healthcare access, improving service quality, and enhancing the long-term sustainability of the healthcare sector.
Health Coverage Reaches 97.5%
According to the report, healthcare coverage in Saudi Arabia has risen to 97.5% of the population, reflecting expanded access to medical services, continued investment in healthcare infrastructure, and improvements in service delivery across the Kingdom.
The IMF also noted that life expectancy has increased to 79.7 years, underscoring the positive impact of ongoing healthcare reforms and preventive care initiatives.
Improved Quality of Care
The report highlighted that Saudi Arabia’s Healthcare Quality Index has reached 70%, reflecting continuous improvements in hospital services, medical standards, workforce development, and patient care.
The IMF emphasized that healthcare reforms have extended beyond service expansion to include stronger governance, better resource management, and improved operational efficiency throughout the healthcare system.
Strengthening Financial Sustainability
The report stated that healthcare sustainability has improved through more efficient financing policies and better allocation of public resources, ensuring continued investment in healthcare while maintaining fiscal efficiency.
These reforms support the sector’s ability to meet growing healthcare demand while preserving service quality and long-term sustainability.
Artificial Intelligence Supporting Healthcare
The IMF also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s increasing use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, pointing to the Seha Virtual Hospital as a leading example of digital transformation in medical diagnosis, remote healthcare, and advanced clinical services.
The initiative reflects the Kingdom’s broader strategy of integrating emerging technologies to improve patient outcomes and enhance healthcare efficiency.
