Virus-Infected Cruise Ship Arrives in Rotterdam Under Strict Health Measures

The cruise ship “MV Hondius” has arrived at the Port of Rotterdam under strict health and safety measures following an outbreak of Hantavirus infections and severe respiratory illnesses onboard, raising international concern in recent days.

Dutch authorities confirmed that the vessel will undergo extensive disinfection procedures while quarantine arrangements have been prepared for 25 crew members and two medical staff still onboard.

Quarantine Could Last Up to 42 Days

Officials stated that some non-Dutch crew members may be transferred to dedicated quarantine facilities, although authorities have not yet confirmed whether they will remain isolated for the full recommended quarantine period of up to 42 days.

The ship had been carrying around 150 passengers and crew members from 23 different countries before multiple cases of severe respiratory symptoms were reported during the voyage.

Three Deaths Linked to the Outbreak

The outbreak reportedly resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a Dutch couple and a German citizen, according to health authorities.

The ship had previously faced difficulties docking after several ports restricted passenger disembarkation due to fears surrounding the virus outbreak.

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents or contact with their waste and secretions. In rare cases, the virus can spread between humans through prolonged close contact.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever.
  • Severe respiratory complications.
  • Fatigue and muscle pain.
  • Potentially life-threatening lung complications in severe cases.

The incident continues to draw close international health monitoring amid concerns over potential transmission and the broader impact of the outbreak.
