Google Cloud has announced Gemini agent, which it calls a single, universal agent for work, at its Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8. Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian introduced the product in his keynote and in a company blog post the same day.

The agent is built to take a goal rather than a list of steps. “You give it objectives, not instructions. You delegate an outcome and come back to finished work,” Kurian wrote. From one window it can answer questions, carry out knowledge work, create images and other media, and write and run code. Google says it can plan jobs that run for hours or days, split them among sub-agents, and work either as a personal assistant or as a team member assigned to a role, such as an analyst in a finance department.

Gemini agent does not rely on Google’s models alone. According to Kurian, it sends each job to the model that fits it best, choosing today between Google’s Gemini family and Anthropic’s Claude models, with other private and open models to be added later. Google presents this routing as a way to raise quality and lower costs, alongside real-time spending caps that administrators set in the Cloud Billing Console.

The agent is available in the Gemini Enterprise app and inside Google Workspace, where users can call it with @Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Chat. It can also be reached from Microsoft 365, Slack and the command line, and an API lets other applications use it without their own interface. Reported connectors include Salesforce, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Confluence and Microsoft Teams.

Google has also prepared versions of the agent for specific industries. Editions for financial services and legal work are in preview, while editions for government, healthcare and retail are listed as coming soon. Early customers named by Constellation Research include Shopify, PayPal and the sportswear brand On.

Gemini agent is currently in private preview for enterprise customers. Google has said only that wide availability is coming soon for Workspace customers on selected Business and Enterprise plans, and it has not published a price. Constellation Research reported that pricing will be based on usage, with no separate add-on.
