The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has announced the completion of manufacturing and factory testing for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will be used in the Riyadh Metro Red Line Extension Project.

The machine is now being prepared for transport to Riyadh, where it will begin excavation work as part of the metro expansion connecting King Saud University with the Diriyah Gate development.

Advanced Engineering Technology

The tunnel boring machine operates using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) technology and features a cutting head measuring 11.16 meters in diameter with a total length of 105 meters.

It is equipped with advanced engineering systems designed to handle a wide range of geological conditions, improving excavation efficiency while meeting high construction and safety standards.

8.4-Kilometer Extension

The Red Line extension will span approximately 8.4 kilometers, linking King Saud University with the Diriyah Gate project.

The route includes 7.1 kilometers of deep underground tunnels and 1.3 kilometers of elevated tracks, further expanding Riyadh’s public transportation network.

Five New Metro Stations

The project includes the construction of five stations.

Two stations will serve King Saud University, including the university’s medical city, health colleges, and the main campus, while three additional stations will be built in Diriyah, one of which will provide a future connection to Metro Line 7.

Supporting Sustainable Urban Mobility

The Red Line extension represents another major step in expanding Riyadh’s transportation infrastructure and improving connectivity between key destinations across the capital.

The project supports Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting sustainable mobility, accommodating rapid urban growth, and enhancing the efficiency of Riyadh’s integrated public transport network.
