Saudi researcher Majed Alawad has earned international recognition after receiving the Distinguished Innovator Award from the Global Innovation Institute for his contributions to sustainable clean energy solutions and climate technology research.
Dr. Alawad serves as director of the Joint Center of Excellence for Nanomaterials for Clean Energy Applications at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, where he leads several advanced research initiatives focused on sustainability, energy, and emerging technologies.
The award is considered one of the world’s leading honors in innovation. The 2025 edition attracted 1,476 applicants from 26 countries, with only 100 winners selected across 10 categories, including 30 recipients in the Distinguished Innovator category.
Innovations Supporting Sustainability
Alawad was recognized for multiple initiatives in climate technology and advanced materials science, including the establishment of “PureSky,” a climate-tech company specializing in atmospheric water harvesting technologies designed to support agriculture and afforestation in arid environments.
He also contributed to launching the “GenAI for Materials Discovery Hackathon,” an initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence with materials science under the supervision of Nobel Prize-winning chemist Omar Yaghi.
Advancing Saudi Innovation
Alawad stated that the award will serve as motivation to continue developing innovative solutions in sustainability and clean energy fields, emphasizing the role of KACST’s research environment in supporting scientific advancement and global partnerships.
The achievement also highlights Saudi Arabia’s growing efforts to strengthen its research, development, and innovation ecosystem as part of Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s broader ambitions to expand its global presence in science and technology sectors.
