Ebola Outbreak Expands in DR Congo as 10 African Countries Face Growing Threat

Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak after the death toll rose to 204 people out of 867 suspected cases, raising fears that the virus could spread to ten other African countries.

Health authorities confirmed that the current outbreak involves the “Bundibugyo” strain of Ebola, considered one of the deadliest variants, with fatality rates reaching up to 50% in the absence of effective vaccines or treatments.

World Health Organization has already declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern as the Democratic Republic of the Congo battles its seventeenth Ebola outbreak.

Ebola is a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever that has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa over the past five decades, according to WHO figures.

The current outbreak is centered in Ituri province in northeastern DR Congo, a region known for intensive mining activities, large-scale daily population movement, and ongoing armed conflict, all of which complicate containment and response efforts.

The virus has also spread into North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, while health authorities continue to struggle with limited laboratory testing capabilities and severe logistical challenges.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that ten African countries are now at risk of Ebola transmission, including South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Congo, Burundi, Angola, the Central African Republic, and Zambia.

As part of precautionary measures, Rwanda imposed restrictions on travelers arriving from DR Congo, while the United States strengthened health screening procedures for air travelers coming from affected African countries.

Health officials warned that continued population movement and ongoing security instability are making it increasingly difficult to contain the outbreak and prevent wider regional spread.
