West Kordofan State in Sudan is witnessing a dangerous escalation in cholera cases, as health officials warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis following dozens of deaths and hundreds of infections reported in recent days amid severe shortages of medicine and medical supplies.
Healthcare workers confirmed that at least 75 people have died while more than 120 others were infected due to the outbreak in the Foga administrative area in Al-Nuhud locality, with new cases continuing to emerge daily.
Officials stated that the disease has now spread to neighboring areas including Al Kabara, Al Gussa, and Al Raqiq, in addition to newly reported infections in Al Ferdous area in Lagawa locality, raising concerns about a wider regional outbreak linked to markets and nearby villages connected to Foga city.
Medical sources said healthcare facilities are struggling to cope with the growing number of patients, particularly due to the urgent need for large quantities of intravenous fluids and the severe shortage of medical supplies and healthcare personnel.
Health workers warned that the current situation could develop into a far more serious health disaster if immediate intervention is not provided to contain the outbreak.
Residents have called on the Sudanese Federal Ministry of Health as well as regional and international humanitarian organizations to urgently provide medicines, IV fluids, and medical support to help control the disease and prevent the humanitarian situation from deteriorating further.
The cholera outbreak comes amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, a war that has severely damaged healthcare and humanitarian services across multiple regions of the country.
