Ancient 100-Piece Abbasid Gold Jewelry Collection Discovered in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Heritage Commission has announced the discovery of a rare collection of gold jewelry dating back to the Abbasid era in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qassim region during archaeological excavations at the historic Dariyah site.

The remarkable discovery includes around 100 gold pieces believed to have formed a complete adornment set, designed with floral-inspired motifs and colorful stone settings mounted within finely crafted gold frames.

Rare Artifacts Reflect Advanced Abbasid Craftsmanship

Among the most notable pieces discovered are:

  • A large circular ornament inlaid with symmetrically arranged colored stones.
  • Multi-colored beads.
  • Delicate gold spacers.
  • Decorative elements crafted using hammering and hand-forming techniques.

According to the commission, the manufacturing methods highlight the advanced goldsmithing craftsmanship and artistic sophistication of the Abbasid period.

Additional Archaeological Discoveries

The findings were uncovered during the fourth season of the commission’s archaeological survey and excavation project at Dariyah.

Excavations also revealed:

  • Stone building foundations.
  • Mud walls.
  • Fire hearths.
  • Plastered rooms.
  • Pottery vessels.
  • Metal tools.

Researchers believe the site dates back to the late ninth century AD, confirming its strategic importance along ancient pilgrimage and trade routes.

Dariyah’s Historical Importance

Located southwest of Al-Qassim, Dariyah is considered one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant archaeological sites, with evidence of human activity stretching from pre-Islamic times into the early Islamic era.

Historically, the site served as a major stop along ancient trade and Hajj routes, particularly the Basran pilgrimage route connecting Iraq to Makkah.

The area contains a wide range of archaeological remains, including:

  • Ancient settlement mounds.
  • Stone structure foundations.
  • Pottery and glass fragments.
  • Soapstone artifacts.
  • Historic Islamic inscriptions.

Preserving Saudi Arabia’s Cultural Legacy

Saudi Heritage Commission CEO Dr. Jasir Alherbish said the discovery reflects the richness of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage and its historical role as a crossroads for trade and cultural exchange.

He emphasized the commission’s ongoing efforts to research, document, and preserve archaeological sites to strengthen understanding of the Kingdom’s history and protect its cultural legacy for future generations.
