Taif Opens a New Path for Wellness Tourism Through Its Mountain Landscape and Natural Assets

Taif is emerging as a promising destination for wellness and nature-based tourism, supported by its mountain setting, moderate climate, forests, valleys and growing collection of resorts, restaurants and outdoor experiences.

The destination’s potential has received an additional boost with the renewal of its designation as a Healthy City by the World Health Organization, after meeting 80 criteria covering areas including the environment, healthcare services, lifestyles and community engagement. Taif is the first Saudi city to receive the recognition twice.

Nature at the Heart of a Changing Tourism Experience

Located among the mountains of Al-Shafa and Al-Hada, Taif has long attracted visitors from across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

Its forests, valleys, mountain scenery and misty landscapes are now becoming increasingly important to a tourism model centered on relaxation, outdoor activities and connection with nature.

Al-Shafa stands out as one of the governorate’s leading natural destinations. Rising to around 2,500 meters above sea level, it enjoys cooler summer conditions, often accompanied by rain and mist, as well as open spaces, mountain views and resorts.

From Short Visits to Longer Stays

Taif’s appeal is increasingly extending beyond short trips, with tourism operators in Al-Shafa reporting growing demand for visitors to stay for several days.

Resort owner Abdulhadi Al-Sufyani said the area’s natural beauty has helped shift it from a short-stay destination toward one where visitors increasingly spend more time.

The quality of the overall tourism experience has also become a critical factor in attracting visitors and encouraging longer stays, particularly as travelers seek privacy, tranquility and proximity to nature.

Healthy City Status Strengthens Taif’s Potential

The renewed WHO Healthy City designation provides additional support for Taif’s ambitions in wellness and health-oriented tourism.

The recognition followed the city’s fulfillment of 80 criteria covering a broad range of quality-of-life factors, from environmental conditions and healthcare services to lifestyles and community participation.

Receiving the designation for a second time also gives Taif a distinctive position as the first Saudi city to achieve the recognition twice.

The concept of wellness tourism does not necessarily mean providing medical treatment. It can also involve experiences designed to support healthier lifestyles through physical activity, outdoor experiences, relaxation and time spent in natural environments.

Wellness Is Not a Substitute for Medical Treatment

Health professionals stress the importance of distinguishing wellness tourism from specialized medical care.

Anas Al-Khoutani, a physiotherapy specialist in Taif, said climate, nature and a peaceful environment can support physical and psychological well-being and improve quality of life, but they should not be considered substitutes for professional diagnosis or treatment.

Activities such as regular walking, reducing exposure to noise and spending more time outdoors can contribute to healthier lifestyles when undertaken appropriately and in line with individual needs.

Combining Healthcare, Rehabilitation, Wellness and Tourism

These assets could allow Taif to develop a more integrated model combining healthcare, rehabilitation, wellness and nature-based tourism.

Visitors could potentially access specialized health services while staying in a supportive natural environment and taking part in suitable outdoor activities, creating an experience that goes beyond conventional tourism.

However, developing such a model requires a clear distinction between general wellness activities and medical or rehabilitation programs, particularly for visitors already receiving treatment.

Specialists emphasize that recovery and rehabilitation programs should be structured and supervised by qualified professionals rather than presenting nature or climate as standalone treatments.

Taif’s Opportunity as a Wellness Destination

Taif possesses many of the ingredients needed to develop into a leading destination for wellness and nature-based tourism: mountain elevations, cooler weather, forests, mist, resorts, open spaces and diverse visitor experiences.

As interest grows globally in travel connected to mental well-being, physical activity, relaxation and nature, these assets could help Taif develop a distinctive tourism offering built around quality of life and the natural environment.

The opportunity could ultimately allow Taif to move beyond its traditional role as a summer destination and develop into an integrated wellness, relaxation and nature-tourism hub, supported by its Healthy City recognition and the mountain landscape that has defined its appeal for generations.
