Dropbox, Inc. is an American software company based in San Francisco that makes cloud storage, file sharing and AI work tools. Its shares trade on Nasdaq under the symbol DBX, and it reports more than 700 million registered users around the world.
The company is changing hands at the top. In May 2026 it named Ashraf Alkarmi co-CEO alongside co-founder Drew Houston, with Alkarmi set to become sole chief executive and Houston executive chairman after a transition period.
Overview and Founding
Dropbox was started in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, who met at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT News reported that Houston began writing the software that year to let people carry files between computers without email attachments or USB drives.
The company went through the Y Combinator startup program and grew around a simple idea: a folder that stays the same on every device. Dropbox says its mission today is to design a more enlightened way of working, with products that cut busywork.
Growth was fast. Revenue passed 1 billion dollars in 2017, and on 23 March 2018 Houston and Ferdowsi rang the opening bell at Nasdaq as the shares began trading, CNBC reported. Dropbox was the first company from Y Combinator to make it all the way to the public market under its founder.
Revenue topped 2 billion dollars in 2021. Since then it has been roughly flat, as Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft compete with their own storage services and Box remains a long-time rival.

What It Does
The core Dropbox service stores, shares and syncs files across computers and phones. Around it the company sells Dropbox Sign for electronic signatures, DocSend for secure document sharing and tracking, Replay for video review and Reclaim.ai for scheduling with AI.
Dash is its main new product. It lets teams find, organise and protect company content across many apps, and Dropbox is building it both as a standalone tool and into the core Dropbox experience. Houston said in February 2026 that the company would focus that year on engagement and adoption of Dash.
Customers range from individuals to large businesses. CNBC has noted that the service remains popular with media professionals, graphic designers and architects who share large files as part of daily work.
The business is highly profitable. In fiscal 2025 Dropbox reported a GAAP operating margin of 27.3 percent and a non-GAAP operating margin of 40.6 percent. In the fourth quarter alone it bought back about 14.4 million of its shares for 414.6 million dollars.
It is also trimming side lines. Dropbox cut its investment in FormSwift at the start of 2025 and plans to wind that business down by the end of 2026, the company said.
Dropbox’s history ties into Silicon Valley’s wider founder story. Our profile of Mark Zuckerberg covers the founder of Meta, where Houston has sat on the board since 2020.
Its senior leadership team has also been largely rebuilt. Dropbox hired Ali Dasdan as chief technology officer in March 2025, Ross Tennenbaum as chief financial officer in December 2025 and Boon Lai, a former Salesforce growth executive, as chief marketing officer in May 2026.
