Saudi academics have emphasized the critical role of higher education in strengthening national values as a primary defense against extremism and a cornerstone for safeguarding societies.

This was highlighted during a forum organized by Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University in Al-Kharj, where Dr. Saad Al-Shathri, adviser to the Royal Court and member of the Council of Senior Scholars, stressed that reinforcing national values is essential for societal protection. He noted that awareness begins with embedding core principles into both daily life and institutional practices.

In parallel, Naif Arab University for Security Sciences hosted an international symposium titled “Publishing and Security” in collaboration with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Participants warned that extremist ideologies tend to spread when individuals lose connection with their cultural identity, including their heritage, traditions, and social values.

Researcher Dr. Ayad Al-Shammari highlighted Saudi Arabia’s comprehensive strategy to combat extremism by promoting moderation, tolerance, and awareness of the dangers posed by radical ideologies. He emphasized that strengthening cultural identity is crucial in countering hate speech and extremist narratives.

Participants also recommended leveraging artificial intelligence positively in publishing to enhance cultural identity and provide valuable resources for researchers and institutions. They further called for a unified national strategy for cultural publishing that integrates traditional, digital, visual, and audio platforms across government sectors.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Muqbil, head of the Intellectual Awareness Unit at the university, stated that intellectual security is no longer optional but a national necessity and a fundamental pillar of comprehensive security, especially in light of modern challenges targeting minds and beliefs.

He added that universities play a leading role in shaping individuals and protecting minds through integrated systems combining education, training, and value development. The university has implemented more than 160 awareness programs benefiting over 10,000 individuals this year.

On the sidelines of the forum, the university signed a memorandum of understanding with the Center for Intellectual Property Protection to strengthen cooperation in research and awareness, further supporting efforts to reinforce national values and build resilient societies.
