Smart Drinking Water System Enhances Sustainability and Pilgrim Comfort at Holy Sites

Saudi Arabia continues advancing smart infrastructure and pilgrim services during the Hajj season through a modern drinking-water development project designed to improve sustainability and enhance pilgrim comfort across the holy sites.

The project includes more than 2,400 modern water points strategically distributed along pedestrian walkways to provide pilgrims with continuous access to chilled and purified drinking water throughout their journey between the holy sites.

Integrated Hydration Stations for Pilgrims

The project was implemented by Kidana Development Co., the executive arm of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites.

Traditional water-distribution points have been transformed into integrated hydration stations designed according to advanced engineering, health, and operational standards.

The initiative includes:

  • Strategic placement of water stations.
  • Continuous access to chilled purified water.
  • Designs that support smooth pedestrian movement.
  • Reduced congestion in high-density areas.

Reducing Heat Stress and Improving Mobility

Beyond water distribution, the system plays an important role in reducing heat stress among pilgrims, particularly during high temperatures experienced throughout the Hajj season.

The project also contributes to improving crowd movement between the holy sites while creating a safer, more comfortable, and calmer environment for pilgrims.

Smart Solutions Supporting Sustainability

The initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to developing sustainable and technology-driven infrastructure solutions that enhance operational efficiency and improve services for millions of pilgrims annually.

These efforts form part of the Kingdom’s ongoing strategy to elevate the overall Hajj experience through advanced logistical, health, and service innovations.
