Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve is set to attract skywatchers, astrophotographers, and astronomy enthusiasts throughout June as a series of celestial events light up its exceptionally dark skies.
Known for its vast desert landscapes and minimal light pollution, the reserve offers ideal conditions for observing stars, planets, and other astronomical phenomena.
Spectacular Celestial Events Throughout June
The reserve recently witnessed a conjunction between Venus and Jupiter, while June 16–18 will feature one of the month’s most remarkable displays as the Moon aligns with Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury.
Additional highlights include the Moon’s conjunction with Regulus on June 19, the summer solstice on June 21, a Mercury-Jupiter conjunction on June 25, the Moon’s conjunction with Antares on June 27, Mars appearing near the Pleiades star cluster on June 28, and a Full Moon on June 30.
These events are expected to draw astronomy enthusiasts from across the Kingdom and beyond.
A Growing Hub for Eco and Astro Tourism
Experts believe the reserve’s unique environment makes it one of the most promising destinations for both astronomical observation and sustainable tourism.
Its dark skies provide excellent conditions for ground-based telescopes and scientific observations, while offering visitors an unforgettable stargazing experience.
The growing popularity of astro-tourism is also expected to support local economic development and diversify tourism offerings in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
International Recognition for Dark Skies
In a major milestone, the reserve received official Dark Sky designation from DarkSky International last year.
The recognition highlights the area’s exceptionally low levels of light pollution and reinforces Saudi Arabia’s growing reputation as a destination for sustainability, nature conservation, and astronomical tourism.
The achievement further demonstrates how the Kingdom is leveraging its unique natural landscapes to create innovative tourism experiences that combine science, education, and environmental appreciation.
