In a significant move to preserve Saudi Arabia’s national heritage, the Council of Ministers has approved transforming the Ministry of Culture’s “Cultural Archive” unit into a non-independent entity called the Saudi Culture Memory Center.
This step represents a major milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to preserve and safeguard its cultural legacy through modern systems focused on documentation, archiving, and digital preservation.
Five Key Areas of Focus
According to the Ministry of Culture, the Saudi Culture Memory Center will focus on five major areas during the coming phase.
These include organizing the cultural documentation sector, strengthening digital archiving, building national capabilities in documentation, ensuring sustainable digital preservation and accessibility, and improving integration with related entities across the cultural heritage ecosystem.
The center aims to establish a unified national framework for documenting and preserving cultural content while improving the efficiency and reliability of cultural data management.
A National Platform for Cultural Preservation
The center will oversee documentation, cataloging, and digital archiving of cultural content, in addition to managing the unified national platform for Saudi cultural memory.
It will also work on developing digital preservation infrastructure and consolidating cultural data under a single national umbrella with standardized frameworks for accessibility and reliability.
This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to strengthen the cultural sector by adopting advanced digital solutions to preserve and showcase national heritage.
The launch of the center aligns with the goals of Vision 2030, which places culture and heritage at the heart of national development while promoting sustainable preservation of Saudi identity for future generations.
