Saudi Arabia Wins Senior Leadership Role in Key UN Space Committee

Saudi Arabia has secured a major international achievement after being elected First Vice-Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), highlighting the Kingdom’s growing influence in the global space sector and international governance.

The appointment was announced during the committee’s latest session in Vienna, Austria, where Muryah Al-Shahrani, General Manager of Space Systems and Infrastructure at the Saudi Space Agency, was elected to the prestigious leadership position.

International Recognition of Saudi Expertise

Al-Shahrani is regarded as one of Saudi Arabia’s leading space specialists and has contributed to numerous international initiatives focused on space governance and sustainability.

His work includes participation in COPUOS activities and global programs addressing the growing challenge of space debris, as well as efforts to strengthen international cooperation in maintaining a safe and sustainable orbital environment.

He has also played a significant role in developing Saudi capabilities in Space Situational Awareness, a critical field responsible for monitoring and managing activities in Earth’s increasingly crowded orbital space.

The election reflects growing international confidence in Saudi Arabia’s expertise and contributions to the future of the global space sector.

Helping Shape Global Space Policies

The First Vice-Chair position is part of COPUOS’ five-member bureau, which oversees the committee’s work and helps coordinate discussions among member states.

The bureau plays a key role in guiding international dialogue on the peaceful and sustainable use of outer space while supporting cooperation in science, technology, and space exploration.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1959, COPUOS currently includes 110 member states and serves as the world’s primary forum for international cooperation in space affairs.

Supporting Saudi Arabia’s Expanding Space Ambitions

The achievement comes as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its presence in the space sector through investments in research, satellite technologies, astronaut programs, and international partnerships.

The appointment further strengthens the Kingdom’s position as an emerging leader in the global space economy and underscores its commitment to contributing to international efforts aimed at ensuring the sustainable and peaceful use of outer space for future generations.
