Saudi Arabia Launches AI-Powered Control Center to Monitor Road Traffic

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Roads has launched an intelligent control center as part of the Kingdom’s ongoing digital transformation of its road management system.

The center uses 130 artificial intelligence-powered cameras to monitor vehicle movement around the clock, track traffic volumes, classify vehicles and detect slowdowns and congestion in real time.

The system is designed to support faster operational decision-making during accidents and emergencies while improving the efficiency of road network management.

Faster Response and Smarter Road Management

The control center works continuously with relevant authorities and directs specialized teams to emergency locations, helping reduce response times, maintain traffic flow and improve road operation and maintenance.

The use of artificial intelligence marks a growing shift toward data-driven road management, enabling authorities to analyze traffic conditions in real time and improve safety and services for road users.

More Than 900 Kilometers of New Road Projects

The launch comes alongside strong operational and development indicators recorded by the General Authority for Roads during the first half of 2026.

The authority completed 40 new road projects covering more than 900 kilometers across Makkah, Madinah, Asir, the Eastern Province and Qassim.

The projects have strengthened connectivity between cities and governorates, reduced travel times and supported economic, tourism and logistics activity.

The authority also issued more than 32,000 permits for services linked to the road network, while logistics roads handled more than 3.7 million truck journeys during the first half of the year.

AI Supporting Road Safety

As part of its efforts to improve road safety, the authority also continued its community engagement initiatives through the sixth edition of the “Distinguished and Safe Roads” campaign.

More than 620 participants across 62 teams took part in the campaign, recording more than 12,000 observations over five days to support road network development and safety improvements.

The authority said the intelligent control center is part of its strategy to adopt advanced technologies, improve road safety and enhance service quality in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
