Saudi Arabia enters global top 10 for private AI investment

Saudi Arabia has strengthened its position in the global digital economy after entering the world’s top 10 countries for private investment in artificial intelligence, highlighting the Kingdom’s growing appeal to technology companies and investors in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global economy.

According to the 2026 AI Index Report from Stanford University, private AI investment in Saudi Arabia reached approximately $2.03 billion in 2025, placing the Kingdom tenth globally and ahead of countries including Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

The development comes alongside rapid expansion in Saudi Arabia’s digital infrastructure, particularly data centers, which have become a critical foundation for artificial intelligence applications and cloud computing.

Data-center capacity reaches 467 megawatts

Saudi Arabia’s operational data-center capacity reached 467 megawatts in the first quarter of 2026, up from just 68 megawatts in 2021, representing nearly sevenfold growth over five years.

The Kingdom now hosts more than 60 data centers across multiple regions, as demand continues to grow for infrastructure supporting cloud computing, AI platforms and advanced digital applications.

Saudi Arabia’s strategic geographic position, connecting Asia, Europe and Africa, further strengthens its ability to attract data-center projects and expand digital services across regional and international markets.

In May 2026, a Bloomberg analysis ranked Saudi Arabia second globally, behind the United States, among the most attractive markets for data-center investment.

Technology workforce reaches 426,000

The expansion in investment and infrastructure has been accompanied by growth in the Kingdom’s technology workforce, which has reached approximately 426,000 professionals and workers.

The growing technology talent base is becoming an important component of Saudi Arabia’s digital ecosystem, helping the Kingdom absorb new investments and translate infrastructure and technology spending into products, services and globally competitive companies.

A digital ecosystem supporting AI ambitions

Saudi Arabia’s AI expansion is not limited to private investment. It forms part of a broader digital transformation covering infrastructure, telecommunications, government services and human-capital development.

World Bank data show that internet usage in Saudi Arabia reached 100% in 2024, while the Kingdom’s technology market exceeded SAR 199 billion in 2025, supported by extensive fiber-optic infrastructure.

The Kingdom has also made significant progress in digital-readiness indicators, strengthening its ability to attract advanced technology projects and creating an environment for wider AI adoption across government and economic sectors.

Data governance strengthens the digital model

The development of Saudi Arabia’s government data ecosystem represents another pillar of its digital transformation, alongside efforts to establish national frameworks for data governance, standardization and use in service development and decision-making.

Recent research has highlighted Saudi Arabia’s digital transformation experience as a potentially replicable framework for countries pursuing national digital strategies, particularly through the use of standardized data and indicators to measure the impact of digitalization on development.

The World Bank has also maintained a long-standing partnership with Saudi Arabia in development, data and economic transformation, while Vision 2030 focuses on building a more diversified and productive economy and strengthening the private sector’s role as a key driver of growth.

AI emerging as a strategic economic sector

Saudi Arabia’s entry into the global top 10 for private AI investment signals a broader shift in which artificial intelligence is becoming not only a technology priority but also a strategic component of the Kingdom’s emerging economy.

With expanding data centers, a growing technology workforce, rising private investment and increasingly sophisticated data infrastructure, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the next wave of global AI development.

These developments support the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy, accelerate innovation and technology adoption, and establish a globally competitive digital economy.
