United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has expressed disappointment over what he described as the introduction of politics and manipulation into football following his team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Pochettino made the remarks after the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, ending the host nation’s World Cup campaign.
“It Wasn’t an Excuse”
The Argentine coach insisted that the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s eligibility did not affect his players’ performance and should not be used as an excuse for the defeat.
He acknowledged that Belgium deserved the victory and that the United States simply failed to perform at its best on the day.
Concern Over Political Influence
Pochettino said he was personally disappointed by what he viewed as political interference surrounding the case, arguing that football should remain focused on sporting principles rather than external influences.
He added that it was the responsibility of the U.S. Soccer Federation to pursue any appeal regarding Balogun’s suspension, while his own responsibility was to prepare the team for the match.
The coach also stressed that he had no issue with Balogun playing once FIFA made him eligible, but remained disappointed by the atmosphere surrounding the controversy.
Belgium Advances to the Quarterfinals
Balogun’s participation became a major talking point after his suspension was temporarily lifted ahead of the match.
Despite the debate, Belgium delivered a convincing 4-1 victory to secure its place in the World Cup quarterfinals, ending the United States’ tournament run.
