How Private Are Your ChatGPT Conversations Key Settings Users Should Know

As millions of people increasingly rely on ChatGPT for work, education, research and everyday tasks, questions surrounding the privacy of conversations and the data shared with artificial intelligence tools have become increasingly important.

AI conversations can contain professional information, uploaded files and personal details, making it essential for users to understand available data controls and follow sensible security practices.

Can ChatGPT Conversations Be Used to Improve AI Models?

How data is handled depends on the type of account, applicable settings and OpenAI’s policies.

For personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI provides a control called “Improve the model for everyone,” which allows users to decide whether new conversations may be used to help improve its models.

Users who disable the setting can prevent new conversations from being used for model training, according to OpenAI’s data-control information.

This can be particularly relevant for people who regularly use AI tools for professional or personal tasks.

How to Turn Off Model Improvement

Users can review the setting through ChatGPT’s Data Controls.

The process generally involves opening ChatGPT, accessing Settings, selecting Data Controls, finding Improve the model for everyone, and switching the option off.

Once disabled, new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI’s models.

That does not necessarily remove conversations from chat history, however. Users who want a different type of conversation can also consider Temporary Chat.

What Is Temporary Chat?

Temporary Chat provides an additional option for conversations users do not want to appear in their normal chat history.

According to OpenAI, Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories and are not used to improve its models. A copy may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

The feature can therefore be useful for short-term conversations users do not need to keep in their regular history.

However, Temporary Chat should not be interpreted as permission to share passwords, financial credentials or other highly sensitive secrets.

Information You Should Avoid Sharing

Regardless of privacy settings, minimizing the amount of highly sensitive information entered into any cloud-based service remains an important security practice.

Users should exercise particular caution with passwords, payment card information, verification codes, API keys, confidential business information, official documents, customer databases and highly sensitive personal or medical information.

Employees should also follow their organization’s policies before uploading internal or confidential documents to AI services.

Protecting Your Account Matters Too

Conversation privacy is only one part of protecting information.

Users should also secure their accounts against unauthorized access by using strong, unique credentials and enabling additional account-security features where available.

Logging out after using shared computers and periodically reviewing privacy and security settings can further reduce unnecessary exposure.

AI Is Changing Digital Privacy

Generative AI has changed the type and volume of information people share with online services.

Instead of entering a short search query, users may upload entire documents, discuss workplace problems, analyze datasets or ask AI to review private correspondence.

That makes understanding what you share, why you are sharing it and how your data settings are configured increasingly important.

The safest principle remains straightforward: avoid entering highly sensitive information into any cloud service unless sharing it is necessary, permitted and appropriately protected.
