Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb said the Kingdom has started reaping the benefits of its major tourism projects developed in partnership with the Public Investment Fund, as several flagship destinations move into full operational phases.
He noted that the tourism sector has demonstrated strong resilience despite global geopolitical challenges affecting international travel markets.
Limited Decline Despite Global Pressures
According to Al-Khateeb, tourism activity recorded a modest year-on-year decline of around 5% during the first five months of 2026.
He described the performance as positive given the broader global environment and the impact of geopolitical developments on travel demand and airline operating costs.
The minister added that the sector had been experiencing strong growth through the end of the first quarter before international travel patterns were affected by recent events.
Domestic Demand Drives Stability
Al-Khateeb emphasized the important role of domestic tourism, noting that local travelers accounted for approximately 60% of tourism activity during the year.
He said strong domestic demand helped offset some of the slowdown in international travel and contributed to maintaining solid performance across the sector.
Tourist destinations throughout the Kingdom have continued to attract increasing numbers of visitors from within the country.
Mega Projects Enter Operational Phase
The minister highlighted that several major tourism developments launched under Vision 2030 have now entered operational stages and begun welcoming guests.
These projects mark a significant transition from planning and construction to active tourism operations, creating new attractions and expanding the Kingdom’s tourism offerings.
Their continued development is expected to contribute to economic diversification and strengthen the tourism sector’s long-term growth prospects.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence
Al-Khateeb also noted that the ministry is closely monitoring the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of tourism jobs and services.
He stressed the importance of leveraging advanced technologies to improve visitor experiences, increase efficiency, and enhance the competitiveness of Saudi tourism destinations.
Optimistic Outlook for Recovery
The minister concluded by expressing confidence that the current slowdown is temporary and that the sector is positioned for a rapid recovery.
He said strong domestic demand, combined with the launch of new tourism projects, will continue to support growth and help achieve the goals of Vision 2030 in establishing the Kingdom as a leading global tourism destination.
