As I sat down with Abdulrahman Al Khathlan, founder and chairman of AHK Group, I felt a surge of excitement and curiosity. The Saudi Times is pleased to feature him this month and share his story. A first mover, trendsetter and recognized pioneer, Al Khathlan has taken lessons learned in the US and Europe and built an operational platform designed to scale with the Kingdom’s giga-project ambitions. His goal is simple and ambitious: to inspire the next Saudi generation and make the Kingdom a global hub for tourism, hospitality and gastronomy.

A changing industry, and an early lesson in timing

“When I started in 1998, the industry in Saudi Arabia was still developing and guest expectations were only beginning to form,” Abdulrahman told The Saudi Times. After spending time in the United States and across Europe, it reshaped his view of hospitality, not merely as food service but as a force that can shape lifestyle, culture and guest behavior. An early attempt to launch a healthy-dining concept back home proved instructive: “The idea was right, but the market was too early, fast food was booming,” he shared with The Saudi Times. That experience cemented a core principle: vision must be paired with market readiness.

From fine dining to platform thinking

AHK’s trajectory moved quickly from landmark openings to systemic work. In 2003 Al Khathlan opened Spazio at Kingdom Tower inside the Four Seasons, one of Saudi Arabia’s first true fine-dining restaurants, developed with international consultants to raise culinary and operational benchmarks. Strategic franchising followed: securing Ladurée in 2014, then Fauchon, making AHK the sole operator to hold both competing patisserie names.

At this point, Abdulrahman Al Khathlan didn’t stop at restaurants. As Saudi Arabia embarked on large-scale projects with Vision 2030, AHK evolved into a hospitality platform able to design and run integrated ecosystems: destination hospitality, workforce catering, VVIP services, mobile kitchens and experiential activations.

“Hospitality isn’t just restaurants. It’s culture, destinations, movement, experience, and emotion,” he told The Saudi Times, a mantra that now guides AHK’s approach to giga projects.

Operational rigor under pressure

The Saudi Times asked the question about scaling and he said that scaling to massive events and complex destinations exposed operational gaps and forced AHK to build repeatable systems. The group ran 22 restaurants for MDLBEAST, serving as many as 25,000 customers per day across a four-day festival, and delivered crew meals and VVIP services for NEOM in 2021–22 with mobile kitchens operating beyond Riyadh. Al Qiddiyah Resort’s restaurant and airport-experience work for King Salman Airport are further proof points.

“Quality isn’t only luxury, quality is operational consistency,” Al Khathlan told  The Saudi Times.

For this hospitality leader, the lesson is clear: preparation, leadership, training, logistics and real-time problem-solving turn ambition into reliably repeatable results. Whether serving 20 VVIPs or tens of thousands, the same systems must hold.

Local identity, global standards

Al Khathlan is explicit about the next phase: local Saudi concepts that meet international benchmarks. At VIA Riyadh, AHK is launching three new concepts designed for identity, durability and accessible pricing.

“Luxury doesn’t have to be ridiculously expensive,” Abdulrahman said, arguing that atmosphere, value and consistency matter as much as prestige.

Translating Saudi identity into scalable guest experiences has been central to AHK’s international showcases, from Davos to ZAAD London during Riyadh Season, where Saudi flavors and hospitality were presented at a fine-dining level without losing authenticity.

“People remember how a country made them feel,” Abdulrahman said. That emotional memory, he says, is the Kingdom’s strongest soft power.

A platform for talent and a school for the future

For leaders and investors, Abdulrahman highlights a strategic gap: talent development. With Vision 2030 targeting tens of millions of visitors, Saudi hospitality needs an ecosystem of trained professionals. AHK is studying a Saudi hospitality academy in partnership with an international culinary institution to build that pipeline. His ambition is to pass the baton to a generation of Saudi chefs, operators and creatives who can build and export world-class concepts.

Final words for the reader

Abdulrahman Al Khathlan’s career is a study in combining first-mover vision with rigorous operational discipline. His message for business leaders is actionable: pair bold ideas with systems that scale, invest in local talent, and preserve cultural authenticity while meeting global standards. He told The Saudi Times he wants the Kingdom’s next generation to inherit both the ambition and the capability to make Saudi Arabia a global hub for tourism, hospitality and gastronomy, and to train the talent that will lead it.

“In recent years, our role has evolved beyond hospitality operations alone. Increasingly, we are working with major developers, destination owners, and project stakeholders at the early stages of development to help design integrated hospitality strategies and guest experience solutions. Our focus is not only on operating restaurants or catering services, but on helping shape the overall hospitality ecosystem of a destination, from guest journeys and service concepts to operational planning, commercial viability, and long-term visitor engagement. We believe that well-designed hospitality experiences do more than improve guest satisfaction; they also enhance destination appeal, increase visitor retention, and contribute directly to the commercial success of a project,” Abdulrahman Al Khathlan told The Saudi Times.

AHK Group is no longer just running hotels and restaurants, it’s helping build them. Today the company acts as a strategic hospitality partner, joining early-stage destination planning with major developers and national projects to shape guest experiences, design hospitality ecosystems, set operational playbooks and model commercial viability long before the ribbon is cut. That shift from operator to adviser means AHK helps clients avoid common launch pitfalls and embeds commercial thinking into the DNA of a project from day one.

In 2026 AHK Group takes that approach to VIA Riyadh, leading the launch of new dining concepts in one of the Kingdom’s premier luxury lifestyle destinations. The focus is clear: concepts that feel locally rooted and culturally authentic, delivered to international standards of service and design. The result is hospitality that resonates with residents and visitors alike, distinctive, scalable and built to last.

AHK Group was recently awarded a two-year contract for Internal and VIP Hospitality Services with Diriyah Co., reflecting an important part of their current work with major national destinations. The group is curating “Made in Saudi” gastronomy while building the Saudi table, and inviting the world to come taste, stay, and experience a new era of authentic hospitality in Saudi Arabia. By pairing bold, visionary concepts with disciplined, repeatable systems, Abdulrahman Al Khathlan has crafted a clear blueprint to turn Saudi ambition into lasting global leadership in hospitality and gastronomy.
