The historic village of Zubala in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders Region stands as one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks, having served for centuries as a vital meeting point for caravans, pilgrims, and traders traveling along the famous Darb Zubaydah route connecting Iraq and parts of the Levant with Makkah.

Located approximately 25 kilometers south of Rafha Governorate, Zubala preserves a rich human, cultural, and natural heritage reflecting the region’s transformation from the pre-Islamic era through the early Islamic period, reinforcing its historical importance on ancient Hajj and trade routes.

Archaeological studies indicate that the history of Zubala spans more than 4,000 years, giving the village a unique status among the Kingdom’s historical settlements.

One of the site’s most remarkable features is its sophisticated water system, which includes more than 350 wells and reservoirs of varying sizes, clear evidence of long-term human settlement and an impressive ability to adapt to the harsh desert environment.

Since 2015, archaeological excavations at the site have uncovered several important discoveries, including a rectangular mosque and the remains of ancient tandoors, traditional bread ovens once used for cooking.

Researchers also uncovered seven closely grouped ovens in a single location, reflecting an organized and stable pattern of habitation within the village.

Additional excavations revealed a wide collection of archaeological artifacts, including pottery, ceramics, soapstone tools, and finely crafted metal and glass objects. These findings highlight the craftsmanship of ancient artisans and point to active trade relations and cultural exchanges between Zubala and major urban centers across the Islamic world.

Today, Zubala continues to strengthen its position as one of Saudi Arabia’s most important heritage sites, preserving valuable evidence of the region’s ancient pilgrimage and trade history.
