The King Khalid Racecourse in Taif is poised for a spectacular weekend of racing, with the Taif Derby taking center stage on Saturday’s schedule.
Among a field of 12 elite horses, Mhally, last season’s 2000 Guineas champion, aims for a classic double as they vie for the $106,000 Derby prize against familiar rivals.
The evening continues with the Taif Arabian Derby for Purebred Arabians, offering another $106,000 purse. Leading the pack is Wared Al-Sengar, under trainer Mustafa Al-Mosa’s guidance, set to compete against nine challengers over 1,600 meters.
Mhally marks his seasonal comeback, hunting another trophy after his notable Guineas win and strong performance in the Saudi Derby. Jaarif, just a half-length behind in the Guineas, will ride under Khaled Al-Mimoni for trainer Abdullah Al-Monif, while Faal Khair, who finished fourth, returns under the White Stables of King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz and Sons.
Camilo Ospina, fresh off six wins in last weekend’s Taif Jockey Championship, will mount again for trainer Ahmed Mohamoud, following a strong second place in the preparatory trial. Mhalhal, piloted by Mohammed Al-Daham, adds depth as Al-Daihani’s second entry.
An intriguing addition comes with Bernard Shaw, raced by Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdulaziz, making his Saudi debut via the distinguished Red Stable. This $1.8 million yearling, now with Fahad Al-Fouraydi for trainer Hadi Gharawi, adds international flair to the field.
In the Arabian class, Wared Al-Sengar remains the top pick under Mohammad Al-Hubail, closely followed by Wasib, trained by Abdulaziz Al-Mosa, and HM Al-Nasserallah, trained by Bassim Al-Mousa. Lacy Des Vialettes, last season’s King Faisal Cup winner, also returns—under the Mosa stable and Al-Mimoni—to prove herself again.
Additionally, 16 local-bred horses will compete in the Taif University Cup, an open race over 1,400 meters, concluding the evening with a display of homegrown talent.
Friday’s highlight—the 1540m Makkah Governor Cup—features a compelling face-off with “Final Destination” and “Uncle” vying again with Henry Q after a tight trial at the start of August.
