In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a team of Saudi surgeons successfully separated Jamaican conjoined twins Azaria and Azura after a complex and delicate procedure performed at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in Riyadh.
The surgery, led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, head of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Program, followed months of preparation and detailed studies of the twins’ condition. The girls were born joined at the chest and abdomen, sharing several vital organs.
More than 35 medical experts, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatric specialists, and nurses, took part in the procedure, which involved multiple stages — separating shared organs, reconstructing tissues, and ensuring both twins’ stability throughout the operation.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah praised the success as a testament to the remarkable expertise and precision of Saudi medical professionals, noting that this operation ranks among the most challenging surgeries conducted under the Kingdom’s renowned humanitarian program, which has treated cases from over 25 countries.
The accomplishment highlights Saudi Arabia’s leadership in global humanitarian healthcare, reaffirming its role as a hub for advanced pediatric and surgical excellence dedicated to saving lives beyond borders.
