For most people, the human eye is simply part of the face. Through the lens of Saudi photographer Ashraf Habib, however, it becomes an extraordinary world of colors, patterns and intricate details, revealed through a specialized form of photography that combines art, technology and scientific precision.

The “Gate of Sights” exhibition, held at Galleria Center in Jeddah, was dedicated to iris photography and represented an extension of Habib’s artistic vision as the founder of the “Qurrat Ain” platform.

His project focuses on documenting and photographing the human iris as a unique visual signature, creating an artistic experience that blends professional photography with advanced imaging technology.

20 Images Reveal the Hidden Details of the Human Eye

The exhibition featured 20 large-format iris photographs, revealing intricate patterns, structures and colors that are difficult to observe with the naked eye.

Through specialized cameras and macro lenses, each iris is transformed into a distinctive piece of art, displaying combinations of colors and naturally occurring patterns unique to the individual.

Around 12,000 Irises Photographed Over Three Years

Over the course of approximately three years, Habib photographed around 12,000 irises, developing his expertise after first becoming interested in the specialized art of iris photography.

Habib explained that advanced cameras and micro lenses can reveal remarkable details hidden within an eye that may appear to be a single color when viewed normally.

A closer look often reveals multiple shades, textures and complex structures, highlighting the unique visual characteristics of every iris.

From Sunflowers to Volcanoes and Ocean Waves

Among the exhibition’s most striking works were enlarged iris portraits that appeared to resemble scenes from the natural world.

Some images evoked the vibrant petals of a sunflower radiating from its center, while others resembled the fiery crater of a volcano or the swirling movement of ocean waves.

The visual similarities highlight how patterns found within the human eye can mirror some of nature’s most captivating forms.

An Interactive Experience Blending Art, Science and Identity

The exhibition went beyond displaying photographs by offering visitors an interactive experience, with many choosing to have their own irises photographed and discover the intricate details hidden within their eyes.

Some visitors reportedly spent several minutes studying the large-format images before realizing they were looking at photographs of real human eyes rather than digitally created artworks.

The experience brought together art, science, technology and personal identity, introducing audiences to a highly specialized form of photography that remains relatively rare in the region.

Extraordinary Beauty May Be Closer Than We Think

At the heart of the “Gate of Sights” exhibition is a simple message: extraordinary beauty does not always have to be found in distant landscapes or famous landmarks. Sometimes, it can exist within the human eye itself.

Through his work, Ashraf Habib presents iris photography as a unique way of exploring human individuality, revealing a hidden visual world that often remains invisible until viewed through the lens of specialized photography.
