Saudi Environment Week 2026 has officially launched under the theme “Green Impact,” showcasing significant progress in environmental protection and sustainability across the Kingdom through strengthened policies and large-scale initiatives.
The event was inaugurated in Riyadh by Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, featuring a wide range of initiatives, exhibitions, and workshops focused on sustainability, vegetation expansion, and waste management.
Driving Environmental Transformation
In collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and the Council of Universities’ Affairs, the event includes workshops on the “green university” concept, aiming to integrate sustainability into higher education and align with Saudi Vision 2030.
These efforts are built on five key pillars: green education, research and innovation, campus operations, community engagement, and governance.
Tangible Results and Achievements
The 2026 edition highlights measurable outcomes of national environmental policies, including:
- Protected areas expanding more than fourfold
- Recycling rates tripling significantly
- Over one million hectares of degraded land restored
- Approximately 159 million trees planted using renewable water sources
There has also been a noticeable reduction in harmful practices such as illegal logging and poaching, reflecting stronger regulatory enforcement.
Strategic Partnerships for Sustainability
The event witnessed the signing of 44 strategic agreements aimed at strengthening environmental initiatives and expanding afforestation efforts, highlighting a collaborative approach involving government entities, the private sector, and the community.
Institutional Development and Readiness
Officials highlighted advancements in environmental governance, including updated regulations, improved compliance systems, expanded meteorological services, and cloud seeding programs that have contributed to increased rainfall and improved vegetation cover.
Additionally, more than 90 percent of industrial facilities have obtained environmental permits, indicating widespread adherence to environmental standards.
From Awareness to Action
Experts noted that while environmental awareness is high, the real challenge lies in translating it into daily behavior. Progress depends on making sustainable choices easier and more accessible for individuals.
