Dr. Fahad Alyami: Advancing Pediatric Urology Through Robotic Surgery, Education, and Surgical Innovation

Dr. Fahad Alyami is a Saudi pediatric urologist, academic, surgeon, and healthcare leader whose career has been defined by a commitment to advancing pediatric urology through minimally invasive surgery, surgical education, research, and healthcare transformation.

Based in Riyadh, Dr. Alyami serves as a Pediatric Urologist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC), where he is also the Pediatric Urology Fellowship Director. His clinical practice has a particular focus on minimally invasive pediatric urology, including advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. His experience includes procedures such as pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, and Mitrofanoff creation, as well as the management of vesicoureteral reflux and complex reconstructive conditions.

An Internationally Trained Pediatric Urologist

Dr. Alyami’s medical journey began at King Saud University, where he obtained his MBBS in 2005. He subsequently pursued postgraduate urological training in Canada, completing his urology training at Dalhousie University and obtaining the FRCSC in Urology in 2013.

He then completed a two year Pediatric Urology Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), University of Toronto, from 2013 to 2015. His training was further complemented by a Pediatric Robotic Urological Surgery mini fellowship at the University of Chicago in 2015.

Alongside his clinical training, Dr. Alyami developed a strong interest in medical education and subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Medical Education from King Saud University between 2018 and 2020.

A Focus on Minimally Invasive and Robotic Pediatric Urology

A defining feature of Dr. Alyami’s career has been his commitment to minimally invasive surgery in children. His practice encompasses laparoscopic and robotic approaches to a broad range of pediatric urological conditions, with particular experience in minimally invasive pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, and complex reconstructive procedures such as Mitrofanoff creation.

His academic work reflects this clinical focus. His publications and presentations have explored several areas of minimally invasive pediatric urology, including laparoscopic orchidopexy, laparoscopic management of urinary stones, pyeloplasty, ureteric reconstruction, and other advanced surgical techniques.

His research has also contributed to the development and evaluation of innovative approaches to pediatric reconstruction, including his published work on side to side ureterocystotomy for obstructed megaureters.

Building the Next Generation of Surgeons

For Dr. Alyami, surgery extends far beyond the operating room. A significant part of his professional career has been dedicated to training surgeons and developing structured approaches to surgical education.

He previously served as Urology Residency Program Director at King Saud University from 2016 to 2021 and as Pediatric Urology Fellowship Director from 2017 to 2022. He also led the Surgical Simulation Unit and the Experimental Surgery and Animal Facility at King Saud University.

During his leadership in surgical simulation, he established regular basic suturing courses and fundamental laparoscopic surgery workshops and contributed to the implementation of Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) curricula for Urology, General Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology residency programs.

His educational activities have also extended to advanced pediatric reconstructive surgery. He has served as an instructor and course director in multiple workshops covering bladder augmentation and reconstruction, microsurgery, hypospadias repair, and minimally invasive pediatric urology.

This combination of clinical expertise and surgical education has become an important part of his professional identity: not only performing advanced surgery, but also developing the systems, training environments, and educational opportunities needed to help the next generation of surgeons master these skills safely and effectively.

Research and Academic Contributions

Dr. Alyami has maintained an active academic and research portfolio throughout his career. His work spans pediatric urology, minimally invasive and reconstructive surgery, surgical education, healthcare workforce development, and broader areas of urological practice.

His publications include research on hypospadias, dysfunctional voiding, pediatric urinary tract reconstruction, bladder augmentation, urinary stones, pediatric renal transplantation, and minimally invasive surgery.

His academic involvement extends beyond authorship. He has served as an editorial board member and reviewer for multiple journals in his field.

A Broader Role in Healthcare Transformation

Dr. Alyami’s career has also extended beyond clinical medicine and academia into healthcare leadership and system transformation.

He served as a consultant and advisor within the Ministry of Health Vision Realization Office, where he was involved in major healthcare transformation initiatives involving several healthcare related entities.

He also served as Head of Research and Development and Consultant at the National Center for Healthcare Workforce Planning under the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.

These experiences provided Dr. Alyami with a broader perspective on healthcare, allowing him to combine clinical expertise with an understanding of healthcare systems, workforce planning, organizational development, and national health transformation.

Sharing Knowledge Beyond Saudi Arabia

Dr. Alyami has been an invited speaker at major urological meetings and educational events in Saudi Arabia and internationally.

His academic work has also been presented at prominent international meetings, including the AUA/SPU meeting, Canadian Urological Association meetings, and the European Society for Paediatric Urology meeting.

Looking Ahead

The trajectory of Dr. Fahad Alyami’s career reflects many of the major developments shaping modern pediatric urology: the transition from conventional open surgery toward minimally invasive and robotic techniques, the evolution of surgical training toward simulation based education, and the growing integration of clinical practice with research and healthcare transformation.

At the center of this journey is a simple but powerful philosophy: advancing pediatric urology requires more than adopting new technology. It requires sound surgical judgment, evidence based practice, continuous education, meaningful research, and the development of the right environment in which innovation can ultimately translate into better care for children.

Dr. Alyami’s career continues to bring these elements together, positioning him at the intersection of advanced pediatric urological surgery, robotic and minimally invasive techniques, surgical education, research, and healthcare leadership.
