At the International Falcon Breeders Auction hosted by the Saudi Falcons Club in Riyadh, a rare gyr “super white” hybrid falcon bred in Slovenia fetched SR 151,000 (approximately USD 40,000) in the highest bid of the event.
The under-one-year-old chick, measuring around 43 centimeters in length and weighing about 1.05 kilograms, drew bidding starting at SR 50,000. The buyer’s identity remains undisclosed, with the custom of naming the bird only after purchase.
Another highlight was a gyr shaheen falcon from a UK breeder, weighing about 1.17 kilograms, which sold for SR 51,000.
The gyr falcon, the largest falcon species globally, comes in colors from pure white to deep brown and is highly prized for its broad wings and long tail—making it a top choice among falcon breeders and enthusiasts.
The auction, held at the Saudi Falcons Club headquarters in Riyadh and running through August 25, serves as a premier platform for showcasing advanced falcon breeding and hybridization techniques while reinforcing the Kingdom’s cultural heritage in line with its broader Vision 2030 goals.
