Prince Faisal bin Mishal bin Saud, Governor of Qassim, chaired a dedicated meeting this week at his office to review the programs and initiatives operating under the Prince Faisal bin Mishal AI Chair at Qassim University. The session brought together the university’s leadership, including President Dr. Mohammed Al-Sharkh, and underlined the region’s growing commitment to embedding artificial intelligence across higher education and research.
The AI Chair — which bears the name of the Qassim Governor — operates within the university’s College of Computer and Information Sciences and has been instrumental in developing an AI talent pipeline aligned with national and global demand. Its programs extend from applied research to graduate-level study, including a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence designed to equip graduates with advanced competencies that serve both the domestic economy and Saudi Arabia’s global ambitions in the technology sector.
Building AI Capacity Across Saudi Arabia
The Qassim review reflects a broader trajectory in Saudi Arabia’s higher education sector, where universities are increasingly restructuring their academic offerings and research infrastructure around artificial intelligence. Vision 2030 has placed the development of a knowledge-based economy at the heart of the national agenda, and institutions like Qassim University have responded by launching specialised AI programs, forging private sector partnerships, and integrating AI applications into community development initiatives across the region.
During the session, the Chair’s team presented its current research projects and upcoming initiatives. The Governor stressed the importance of translating academic innovation into tangible economic and social outcomes, pushing for closer alignment between university research output and the real needs of Qassim’s growing economy.
Qassim University: A Model for Comprehensive Development
Qassim University has also extended its work beyond the campus walls. The university’s Sustainable Development Centre has been active in environmental and ecotourism initiatives in the region, including recent contributions to the development of Shu’ayb Al-Tarfiyya — a natural site being prepared for ecological preservation and tourism, consistent with Saudi Arabia’s goals for sustainable development and nature-based experiences.
The convergence of AI research, community development, and environmental stewardship at Qassim University illustrates how Saudi Arabia’s regional universities are evolving into multidimensional contributors to the national development agenda — institutions that serve not only academic advancement, but the broader transformation the Kingdom has set in motion.
