German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has added another milestone to his remarkable career by becoming the oldest German player ever to appear in a major international tournament.
The historic achievement came during Germany’s opening match against Curaçao at the FIFA World Cup 2026, further cementing Neuer’s status as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers.
A New German Record
At 40 years and 79 days old, Neuer officially became the oldest player to represent Germany in either the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship.
The record surpasses the previous mark held by German legend Lothar Matthäus, who was 39 years and 91 days old when he appeared against Portugal at UEFA Euro 2000.
The achievement highlights Neuer’s longevity and ability to remain at the highest level of international football despite the physical demands of the modern game.
Nagelsmann’s Trust Rewarded
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann maintained his confidence in Neuer ahead of the tournament and selected him as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Despite injury setbacks in recent years, Neuer’s experience, leadership, and quality convinced the coaching staff that he remained the ideal figure to lead Germany on the world stage.
An Extraordinary Career
Neuer has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in football history, winning numerous domestic and international titles while revolutionizing the role of the modern goalkeeper.
He played a crucial role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph and has consistently been regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers the sport has ever produced.
Germany Targets World Cup Success
Germany competes in Group E alongside Curaçao, Ecuador, and Côte d’Ivoire as it aims to make a deep run in the tournament.
While the team focuses on its World Cup ambitions, Neuer continues to build an extraordinary legacy through performances and records that may stand for years to come.
