In a revered annual tradition, the Holy Kaaba’s kiswa — its ornate black cloth covering — was ceremonially replaced early Monday morning, coinciding with the first day of Muharram 1446 AH and the start of the Islamic New Year.
The intricate operation was carried out by a skilled team from the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques in coordination with the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba Kiswa.
The old kiswa was carefully removed and replaced with a new one made of high-quality black silk, embroidered with verses from the Qur’an in gold and silver thread.

The kiswa is produced entirely in the Kingdom, using state-of-the-art weaving technology and expert craftsmanship.
It weighs approximately 1,350 kilograms of silk, 120 kilograms of gold threads, and 100 kilograms of silver — a testament to the detailed and dedicated effort put into its creation.
This significant event reflects the Kingdom’s enduring commitment to the care and honor of the Two Holy Mosques.
The sight of the new kiswa draped over the Kaaba each new Hijri year continues to inspire awe and spiritual reverence among Muslims around the world.
