Al-Fateh head coach Jose Gomes stated that his team’s 1-1 draw against Al-Shabab was in line with expectations, given the opponent’s quality and experience.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gomes explained that his team focused on defensive organization and managed to take the lead, before Al-Shabab equalized by capitalizing on a key opportunity. He also noted that the congested schedule, with matches every three days, has a clear impact on players’ physical and mental performance.
Gomes highlighted that Al-Fateh improved in the second half by closing spaces in midfield, which reduced Al-Shabab’s attacking threat. However, defensive lapses—particularly in dealing with crosses and allowing space on the flanks—contributed to the opposition’s comeback.
He emphasized that despite solid defensive structure, his team lacked efficiency in front of goal and failed to capitalize on scoring chances, adding that facing a team like Al-Shabab requires full concentration throughout the match due to their ability to create decisive moments.
Regarding his players’ performance, Gomes stated that he is not disappointed despite the lack of victories, stressing that they are giving their maximum effort under the current circumstances. He added that taking the lead naturally led the team to focus on protecting the result.
“Our objective was to secure all three points, and we are not satisfied with the draw, especially considering the chances we created,” Gomes said.
He also stressed the importance of respecting the opponent, noting: “We must not forget that we were playing against a big team like Al-Shabab, with players capable of making a difference even in difficult situations.”
Gomes concluded by affirming that the team’s focus is now on finishing the season in the best possible way, while planning ahead to build a more balanced squad, highlighting the need to support young talents with experienced players to accelerate their development.
