The draw for the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite 2026-27 has produced a series of high-profile matchups for Saudi Arabia’s five participating clubs, with the draw held on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Saudi Arabia will be represented by Al Ahli, Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Al Qadsiah, all of whom will face a challenging group of West Asian opponents as they begin their campaigns for the new continental season.
Five Saudi Clubs to Face Eight Opponents
The draw has matched the Saudi clubs against eight opponents from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Uzbekistan.
The teams include Al Ain, Shabab Al Ahli and Al Wasl from the UAE, Al Sadd, Al Gharafa and Al Shamal from Qatar, as well as Neftchi and Pakhtakor from Uzbekistan.
The fixtures will be played under the competition’s new format, which provides participating clubs with a larger number of high-level continental matches.
Al Ahli Begins Title Defense
Al Ahli enters the new campaign as the reigning continental champion and will seek to defend its title after winning the previous edition.
The Saudi club is also aiming to make history by becoming the first team to win the AFC Champions League Elite title three consecutive times, setting up a major challenge for the defending champions.
Al Ahli’s campaign will attract particular attention as the club seeks to maintain its dominance in Asian football and strengthen its position among the continent’s leading teams.
Expanded Competition Featuring 32 Clubs
The 2026-27 edition will feature a significant expansion, with 32 clubs participating for the first time since the competition was relaunched under the AFC Champions League Elite name in the 2024-25 season.
The expanded format reflects the Asian Football Confederation’s efforts to develop the competition, increase the number of high-profile matches and strengthen the tournament’s competitive and commercial appeal.
Competition Set to Begin in September
The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 14, 2026, with the league stage running through February 2027.
Following the league stage, the top eight teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16, which is scheduled to take place from March 1 to 17, 2027.
The league-stage results will determine the clubs’ paths into the knockout rounds as Asia’s leading teams compete for places in the decisive stages of the tournament.
Saudi Arabia to Host the Finals
Saudi Arabia will host the final stages of the competition under a centralized format, with all matches from the quarter-finals onward scheduled to take place in the Kingdom.
The finals are scheduled for April 23 to May 1, 2027, bringing the continent’s decisive matches to Saudi Arabia as the remaining clubs compete for the Asian title.
The hosting rights further underline Saudi Arabia’s growing role in staging major international sporting events and could provide Saudi clubs with the advantage of home support should they progress to the knockout stages.
Saudi Clubs Target Continental Glory
The expanded Saudi representation adds further interest to the competition, with five clubs entering the West Asian league stage and each carrying different ambitions.
While Al Ahli will seek to retain its title and pursue an unprecedented third consecutive crown, Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Al Qadsiah will all be targeting deep runs and a place in the final stages on home soil.
With the competition beginning in September, attention will turn to whether the Saudi clubs can convert their strong representation in the league stage into qualification for the knockout rounds and ultimately a challenge for the continental crown.
