Saudi Arabia is advancing its environmental sustainability goals through an innovative initiative that focuses on storing native seeds to strengthen vegetation cover and combat desertification across the Kingdom — a key step aligned with Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.
The project involves collecting and preserving seeds from rare and endangered native plants in specialized facilities with controlled temperature and humidity to ensure their long-term viability. These stored seeds can be used throughout the year to support reforestation, ecosystem restoration, and soil rehabilitation efforts across deserts and mountain regions.
Environmental experts emphasized that seed banking is a cornerstone of ecological restoration, allowing the preservation of plant biodiversity while enabling replanting with native species that thrive naturally in the Kingdom’s arid climate, reducing the need for excessive water use.
The initiative supports the work of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, which is implementing large-scale projects to plant millions of trees, restore rangelands, and promote environmental awareness nationwide.
By ensuring a continuous source of seeds, Saudi Arabia aims to transform vast areas of barren land into sustainable green landscapes, reinforcing its leadership in environmental conservation and its vision for a greener, more resilient future.
