May 31 marks World No Tobacco Day, a global initiative aimed at intensifying efforts to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and its devastating consequences.
The 2025 campaign places a strong emphasis on protecting young generations from falling into nicotine addiction
and highlights the need to strengthen prevention strategies and health education worldwide.
Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable death globally, claiming over 8 million lives each year,
including more than 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke.
Smoking is directly linked to serious illnesses such as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and chronic respiratory conditions,
while also weakening the immune system and overall health.
Studies indicate that most smokers begin in adolescence, making young people particularly vulnerable to marketing tactics that falsely associate smoking with freedom, confidence, or style.
This year’s theme reinforces the urgency of creating supportive environments that empower youth to make informed,
smoke-free choices and resist social and media pressures.
Saudi Arabia continues to advance its national anti-smoking strategy through awareness campaigns,
strict regulation of tobacco advertising, expansion of free quit-smoking clinics, and public health initiatives that promote tobacco-free lifestyles.
These collective efforts contribute to building a healthier society and protecting future generations from the long-term harms of tobacco.
