US YouTuber Remains in Custody in India After Visiting Restricted Island With a Diet Coke

Popular American YouTuber Alex Pierce, known for his “Indigo Traveller” channel, remains in Indian custody after allegedly visiting the highly restricted North Sentinel Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Pierce was reportedly apprehended after attempting to film content near the island while holding a can of Diet Coke, in what Indian authorities describe as a serious violation of laws protecting isolated tribal communities.

The Indian Navy intervened immediately upon detecting his presence near the prohibited zone.

North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese, an uncontacted tribe living in complete isolation, and any interaction with outsiders is strictly banned to prevent the introduction of foreign diseases and preserve their way of life.

Authorities have confirmed that the YouTuber breached the 1956 Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Act, and he may face legal consequences.

His actions echo a tragic 2018 incident, when an American missionary was killed while trying to make contact with the same tribe.

The Indian government maintains strict restrictions on access to the island, underscoring the importance of respecting indigenous sovereignty and cultural preservation.
