U.S. Outcry as Arab-American NYC Mayor Candidate Eats Biryani with His Hands on Camera

A heated debate has erupted in the United States after Arab-American New York City mayoral candidate, Zahran Mamdani, was seen eating traditional biryani with his hands during a televised interview—prompting reactions that polarized public opinion on cultural norms and civility.

Republican Congress member Brandon Gilles blasted his behavior as “uncivilized,” asserting that Americans adhere to certain etiquette: “Those who refuse to follow them belong to the Third World.” Many U.S. media outlets condemned this rhetoric as culturally prejudiced and accused Gilles of applying double standards to Mamdani.

Supporters rallied behind Mamdani, highlighting that many U.S. politicians, including former President Donald Trump, have been photographed eating with their hands.

One activist quipped: “If eating with your hands is uncivilized, then Trump was uncivilized too.” Turkish-American host Cenk Uygur chimed in: “Civilization collapses if you don’t use a fork—yet eating pizza with your hands is perfectly fine!”

The candid footage was captured while Mamdani was discussing his upbringing in Uganda and the influence of his diverse cultural background on his political outlook.

At 33, he is one of the leading Democratic candidates for NYC mayor, with this controversy resonating significantly within culturally conservative communities.

Mamdani, a prominent Arab-American contender, could become the first Muslim of Indian descent to hold the office if elected.

His campaign has also featured visible support from his wife, Arab artist Rama Dougie, who has maintained a strong media presence.
