The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) announced that Saudi Customs recorded 900 contraband seizures across the Kingdom’s land, sea, and air ports within a single week, reaffirming the scale of border enforcement operations that have become a defining feature of the Kingdom’s security infrastructure.
A Broad Range of Prohibited Items Intercepted
The seized items spanned a wide spectrum of prohibited categories. Narcotics constituted the most significant portion of the haul, with 133 different types of controlled substances intercepted — including hashish, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and Captagon pills. Customs inspectors also confiscated 291 additional prohibited materials, along with 1,975 units of tobacco products and their derivatives. The week’s seizures further included 28 types of currency and three categories of weapons and related equipment.
The volume and diversity of confiscated goods speaks to the sophistication of ZATCA’s screening systems and the depth of coordination between customs agents, port authorities, and law enforcement bodies across the Kingdom’s entry points.
Commitment to Protecting Society and the National Economy
ZATCA framed the weekly results as part of its sustained mission to safeguard national security and protect public welfare. The authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict customs oversight of the Kingdom’s imports and exports, working in close cooperation with all relevant government partners and international counterparts to dismantle smuggling channels before they cause harm.
Saudi Arabia’s customs enforcement framework has steadily expanded in scope over recent years, with ZATCA investing in advanced scanning equipment, inter-agency data sharing, and joint operations across its network of ports. The Kingdom’s geographic position as a transit hub between Asia, Africa, and Europe makes robust border control a priority for authorities overseeing both trade and security.
Public Role in Combating Smuggling
ZATCA also urged members of the public to play an active role in reporting suspicious activity that may indicate smuggling or violations of the Unified Customs Law. Reports can be filed through the dedicated security hotline at 1910, the international line at 009661910, or via email. The authority confirmed that all reports are handled in strict confidentiality, and that a financial reward is offered to whistleblowers whose information leads to a verified seizure.
The publication of weekly seizure data has become a regular practice for ZATCA, reflecting the Kingdom’s approach to transparency in law enforcement and public accountability. The consistent reporting positions Saudi Arabia’s customs apparatus as one of the most active and methodical in the region, processing millions of shipments annually while maintaining vigilance against contraband of every type.
