Saudi Cabinet Officially Designates 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence

Saudi Arabia has taken a decisive step in cementing its position as a global leader in technology and digital transformation. The country’s Cabinet officially designated 2026 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence,” a decision announced following a virtual meeting chaired by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who also serves as Prime Minister.

The designation is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader ambition to establish the Kingdom as a world-class hub for artificial intelligence, aligning closely with Vision 2030’s goals of building a knowledge-based, diversified economy less dependent on hydrocarbons.

A National Commitment to AI Leadership

The Cabinet’s decision carries significant weight, not only as a symbolic gesture but as a policy signal to public institutions, private sector partners, and international investors. By dedicating an entire national year to artificial intelligence, the government is directing ministries, regulatory bodies, and development agencies to align their priorities, budgets, and programmes around AI-driven initiatives.

Saudi Arabia has already made substantial progress on this front. The Kingdom is home to the Arab world’s most advanced AI supercomputing infrastructure and has committed billions of dollars to AI research through entities such as SDAIA (Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority), the NEOM technology ecosystem, and the annual LEAP technology conference, which has grown into one of the largest tech gatherings in the world.

A Strategic Framework for the Future

Beyond the AI designation, the Cabinet also approved the establishment of a new Royal Institute of Anthropology and Cultural Studies, underscoring the Kingdom’s conviction that technological leadership and cultural preservation are complementary rather than competing ambitions. This combination reflects a vision of modernity that is distinctly Saudi in character — one that embraces the future while remaining anchored in heritage.

For investors and technology companies, the Year of AI designation offers a clear entry point into the Saudi market. The Kingdom has already attracted leading global technology firms including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services to establish local operations, with each committing to substantial cloud and AI infrastructure investments in recent years.

Vision 2030 and the Digital Economy

The Year of Artificial Intelligence builds on measurable results already achieved under Vision 2030. Saudi Arabia has trained hundreds of thousands of its citizens in AI and digital skills, and launched the National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence, which targets a contribution exceeding SAR 74 billion from the AI sector to the country’s GDP by 2030.

With the full weight of the Cabinet behind this initiative, 2026 is expected to see accelerated government AI procurement, new regulatory frameworks for responsible AI deployment, and a surge in public-private partnerships focused on smart infrastructure, healthcare technology, and financial services innovation. For businesses and governments around the world, Saudi Arabia’s message is clear: the Kingdom is not a follower in the global AI race — it is a leading participant shaping what comes next.
