Saudi Arabia has declared 2025 as the “Year of Handicrafts,” a groundbreaking national initiative dedicated to safeguarding the Kingdom’s cultural heritage, celebrating traditional craftsmanship, and empowering local artisans.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture through the Heritage Commission, the initiative aligns with Vision 2030 and underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to making culture a driver of sustainable growth and international recognition.
The campaign highlights a wide variety of traditional crafts that have been passed down through generations.
These include Najdi Sadu weaving, reflecting the artistic legacy of Bedouin decoration, palm frond crafts in Al-Baha, and the intricate woodwork of Hijazi architecture, all of which stand as living symbols of the Kingdom’s diverse cultural identity.
By elevating these crafts, the initiative seeks to reinforce national pride while positioning Saudi Arabia as a global hub for creative industries.
Key Objectives of the Initiative
Cultural Identity: Revive and celebrate traditional crafts to connect younger generations with their heritage.
Artisan Empowerment: Provide artisans with training, workshops, and commercial opportunities.
Global Promotion: Showcase Saudi handicrafts through local and international exhibitions.
Economic Development: Create sustainable income opportunities for artisans and integrate handicrafts into the broader creative economy.
Signature Programs
Through the Ibda’a online platform, the Heritage Commission has licensed more than 4,800 artisans in 2025, marking a major step toward regulating and professionalizing the sector.
The establishment of the Artisans House provides a comprehensive space for training, awareness, and innovation, helping artisans adapt their crafts to modern market needs.
One of the year’s flagship events is the Saudi International Handicrafts Week “Banan”, which brings together over 500 exhibitors from more than 25 countries, fostering cultural exchange and expanding international exposure for Saudi crafts.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Handicrafts are increasingly recognized as a pillar of the creative economy, generating jobs, boosting cultural tourism, and enhancing the global presence of Saudi products.
They also serve as a cultural bridge, connecting artisans from around the world, fostering mutual understanding, and showcasing the richness of Saudi heritage.
By declaring 2025 as the “Year of Handicrafts,” Saudi Arabia is placing traditional crafts at the heart of its cultural and economic vision—ensuring that heritage is not only preserved but also transformed into a source of innovation, sustainable livelihoods, and international dialogue.
