The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has announced that 13.9 million Umrah performances were recorded during the Islamic month of Jumada Al-Awwal 1447 AH, with more than 1.7 million foreign pilgrims making the journey to the holy city of Mecca. The figures highlight the continued expansion of religious tourism under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 framework, which has placed the development of pilgrimage infrastructure and digital services at the forefront of national planning.
Record Numbers Reflect Infrastructure and Logistical Strength
The volume of Umrah performances recorded during Jumada Al-Awwal represents a significant operational achievement for Saudi Arabia, which has invested billions in expanding the capacity of the Grand Mosque, improving transport links between Mecca and other cities, and streamlining the visa and permit process for international visitors.
Foreign pilgrim arrivals exceeded 1.7 million during the month, drawn from dozens of countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Saudi Arabia has worked to ensure that visitors from all corners of the world can access the rituals of Umrah through simplified procedures and multilingual digital platforms that guide pilgrims from the point of visa application through to the completion of their journey.
Digital Services Transform the Pilgrim Experience
A key driver of growth in Umrah capacity has been the Kingdom’s deployment of advanced digital tools designed to manage pilgrim flows, reduce congestion, and enhance the safety of religious sites. The Nusuk digital platform, developed by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, enables pilgrims to apply for Umrah permits, book accommodation, arrange transport, and access guidance on rituals — all through a single integrated system available in multiple languages.
Real-time crowd management technologies, smart entry systems, and digital scheduling tools have been integrated into the operational framework of Masjid Al-Haram, allowing the ministry to coordinate the movement of millions of worshippers with greater precision and safety than at any point in history.
Vision 2030 Targets 30 Million Umrah Pilgrims Annually
Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy sets an ambitious target of welcoming 30 million Umrah pilgrims annually by the end of the decade. The sustained growth in monthly performance figures brings the Kingdom closer to that milestone, supported by ongoing infrastructure investments that include expansions to the Grand Mosque complex, upgrades to Madinah Airport and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, and the development of the Haramain High Speed Railway network.
The consistent rise in Umrah numbers also reflects Saudi Arabia’s position as the spiritual center of the global Muslim community, with the government committed to ensuring that every eligible believer who wishes to perform Umrah has the opportunity to do so in comfort, safety, and dignity.
