On this International Day of Forests, Saudi Arabia stands as a compelling case of how a nation once perceived as defined by its deserts has set itself on a path of ambitious and measurable environmental transformation.

The Saudi Green Initiative: A Vision in Bloom

Launched in 2021 under the patronage of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Green Initiative represents one of the most ambitious afforestation programmes in the world. The initiative sets out to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom by 2030, with an interim target of 750 million trees planted domestically. The project encompasses a diverse range of landscapes from the juniper and acacia forests of the Asir mountains in the southwest to the date palms of Al-Ahsa and the coastal mangroves along the Red Sea.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has described Saudi Arabia’s afforestation ambitions as a significant contribution to global forest restoration goals set under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which runs through 2030.

Forests and Economies: This Year’s Global Theme

The International Day of Forests 2026, observed annually on March 21st, carries the theme “Forests and Economies,” recognising that more than 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on forests for subsistence, income, and employment. Saudi Arabia’s investment in its green cover aligns directly with this message: the Kingdom’s tree-planting programmes are not only an environmental commitment, but a structural investment in sustainable livelihoods, ecotourism, and nature-based industries that will diversify the national economy over the coming decades.

The Asir National Park, which hosts one of the greenest natural landscapes in the Arabian Peninsula, continues to attract growing numbers of domestic tourists year-round, illustrating the direct economic returns that come from investing in natural landscapes.

A Global Environmental Leader

Saudi Arabia’s climate strategy extends beyond tree-planting. The Kingdom has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 and has pledged to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. These commitments, presented at successive UN climate summits, have repositioned Saudi Arabia from a fossil fuel producer to an active participant in the global sustainability agenda.

As the world marks International Day of Forests this March 21st, Saudi Arabia’s green transformation continues to gather pace, underscoring the Kingdom’s determination to lead from the front on environmental stewardship while building an economy that is as green as its ambitions.
