In a pioneering move toward digital cultural diplomacy, 76 students from Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong took part in a virtual event titled “Superbund Bonding Space” on August 21, held on the metaverse platform Spatial.io.

What began as a student-led experiment quickly grew into an immersive cultural exchange. Participants created custom avatars, engaged in workshops, hosted digital competitions, and streamed the experience live on Instagram.

They shared Saudi traditions, performed Hong Kong-style stand-up comedy, and demonstrated that cultural diplomacy can flourish within virtual realms. As a result, participants and viewers alike experienced a form of exchange that transcended physical borders.

A former Saudi consul general in Hong Kong remarked: “I never imagined technology could strengthen human bonds this deeply.” Meanwhile, a business community leader praised the initiative, noting that the students “found their identity and purpose through this experience.”

The most touching voices came from the students themselves. Fourteen-year-old podcaster Linda Al-Faisal shared: “It felt like stepping into the future—technology erasing borders and empowering young people to connect globally. This isn’t just an event; it’s a promise that the next generation will lead global unity and innovation.”

Nine-year-old Cherene Ho from Hong Kong said proudly: “I designed my avatar for Spatial—it will create a safe space where others can feel secure.”

This event marks a pivotal shift in how cultural bridges are built. The metaverse has emerged as more than a playground—it’s becoming a digital platform for friendship and a new blueprint for cultural diplomacy in the 21st century.
