In the final of the AFC U-20 Asian Cup, the Saudi national team suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Saturday, losing 5-4 on penalties to Australia.
After extra time ended in a 1-1 draw, Bassem Hazazi stepped up to take Saudi Arabia’s final penalty, but Australian goalkeeper Stephen Hall saved it, securing the title for Australia.
First-Half Action
Louis Agosti put Australia ahead in the first half, but Talal Haji equalized for Saudi Arabia just before halftime.
Haji nearly gave his side the lead in the third minute with a low shot from the right side of the box, but Hall made a fine save. Shortly after, he had another opportunity but fired over the crossbar.
Australia took the lead in the 24th minute, following a set-piece from the left. The Saudi defense failed to clear the danger, allowing Agosti to pounce just outside the penalty area.
His low shot found the bottom corner, with Saudi goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqeeti getting a hand to it but unable to stop it.
When it seemed like the Green Falcons would go into the break trailing, they found the back of the net—just barely.
Nawaf Al-Ghulaimish delivered a cross from the right, and Haji’s header was caught by Hall, who was standing behind the goal line.
After a long VAR review confirmed the ball had completely crossed the line, the goal was awarded.

Second-Half and Extra Time Drama
The second half saw both teams pushing for victory. In the 56th minute, chaos ensued in the Saudi penalty area.
Al-Shanqeeti made a crucial save from Awad Aman, and Australian goalkeeper Daniel Beanie had to stop two shots before Alexander Badolato fired just wide of the post.
Shortly after, Beanie denied a low effort from Saad Haqawi on the left.
Despite several chances, neither team could find a winner, and the match went into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes mirrored the second half, with both sides creating chances but failing to capitalize.
As the referee blew the final whistle, the two-hour-long battle came down to penalty kicks.
Second Shootout in a Row for Saudi Arabia
This marked Saudi Arabia’s second consecutive penalty shootout in the tournament, having previously defeated South Korea in the semi-finals.
However, this time, Australia emerged victorious, leaving the young Green Falcons just short of the championship title.
