A major environmental initiative has been launched in Madinah to plant more than 2.1 million trees across the region, as part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and advance environmental sustainability under Vision 2030.

The initiative aims to combat desertification, improve air quality, and expand green cover throughout Madinah and its surrounding areas — fostering a more sustainable and livable environment for residents and visitors alike.

Organizers explained that the plan focuses on planting native, drought-resistant tree species such as ghaf, tamarisk, and sidr, which are well adapted to the region’s desert climate and require minimal water, ensuring long-term ecological balance.

The project will also employ smart irrigation systems and digital monitoring technologies to maximize water efficiency and ensure sustainable growth, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to integrating modern technology into environmental management.

The initiative brings together public and private sector collaboration, alongside active participation from local communities and students, to promote environmental awareness and social responsibility.

This initiative is part of the Kingdom’s broader green transformation projects aimed at restoring ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, positioning Saudi Arabia as a global leader in climate action and environmental innovation.
