Instagram’s New Update Sparks Global Backlash — Here’s Why Users Are Frustrated

Instagram’s latest update has triggered widespread backlash among users worldwide, following major changes to the app’s interface and content display system. Many users described the new design as “confusing” and said it reduces their control over what appears on their feed.

The update introduced significant modifications to the post and story algorithms, prioritizing recommended content from non-followed accounts over posts from friends and favorite creators. This shift has caused frustration among users who prefer a more personal and chronological browsing experience.

A new feature called “Discover Feed” was also introduced, automatically displaying a wide range of public content by default. The move has drawn criticism from users demanding the ability to fully customize their feeds without excessive algorithmic intervention.

Tech experts suggest that Instagram’s strategy aims to increase user engagement and screen time, similar to approaches used by platforms like TikTok. However, analysts warn that the platform risks losing its original identity as a space for authentic and personal content sharing.

Other changes include a redesigned Direct Messages interface — now resembling instant messaging platforms — and enhanced tools for managing comment and reply privacy. Yet, these improvements have done little to quell the controversy.

The hashtag #InstagramUpdate quickly trended across multiple countries, as users voiced frustration and called for the option to revert to the app’s previous version.

So far, parent company Meta has not issued an official statement addressing the backlash or confirming whether future adjustments will be made. However, industry observers anticipate a corrective update may be released soon to address the widespread criticism.
